In November 2021, HSE University’s School of Politics and Governance and the Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia (New York University) started a new partnership project that involves regular joint online seminars. In March 2021 the HSE University and Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) were awarded an institutional partnership grant from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to foster cooperation between these two institutions and to involve in it a broader group of younger fellows and doctoral students. On May 27th this project will start with a digital workshop "Varieties of Populism in East and West" (deadline for submission is April 23rd; for more info about the workshop see the link at the end of the news). We interviewed Professor Dr. Katharina Bluhm, director of the Institute for East European Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin, about the goals of this project and prospects of cooperation between the HSE University and the FUB.
On March 28-29th, the Gender and Governance International Conference, jointly organized by the Aleksanteri Institute (University of Helsinki) and the Research group 'Comparative Study of the Situation of Women and Men in Public Authorities' from the Faculty of Social Sciences of Higher School of Economics (Moscow), was held in Helsinki. Members and Heads of the HSE study group and researchers and professors from the University of Helsinki presented their reports at the event.
HSE and L'École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) have signed an agreement for the provision of a double degree track for the HSE’s Master's programme in Comparative Social Research. This is the second double degree track being offered to students of this programme. Earlier this year, a similar agreement was signed with the Free University of Berlin.
Over the last three years, Associate Professor Daniil Tsygankov from the HSE Institute of Public Administration and Governance has been studying how the Netherlands, Germany and Russia all introduce the standard cost model, a promising tool for assessing the impact of state regulation on business. Today he will be sharing his experience, gained from conferences, placements, field and practical work in this area.
International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed every year on March 21 around the world. The sole aim of this day is to combat racial discrimination and promote unity. On April 4, 2018, the Student Chamber in the Department of Public Policy held a symposium on promoting tolerance and respect for diversity in the spirit of ending racial discrimination and xenophobia. Attended by both students and lecturers, the symposium was conducted as an integral part of the course on 'Human Rights in Non-western Societies' that is taught in our Master’s programme on Political Analysis and Public Policy.
On April 5 and 6, Professor Staffan Lindberg from the Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg (Sweden) was invited to speak at HSE as part of a workshop on the Varieties of Democracy. The workshop was hosted by HSE’s School of Political Science and the Modernization Mobilization in Eurasia (MME) Project. The MME team carries out data-oriented studies of political participation and institutional transformation in China, Russia, Germany, Iran, Turkey and Japan.
The Global Youth Leadership Development Program provides a unique platform for global youth to gain a nuanced understanding of global affairs. The ultimate aim of the programme is to expose a diverse group of participants from around the world to the idea of leadership, which my fellow participants and I feel was successfully achieved during the pilot programme that was launched in India in March 2017 to meet the specific needs of the Global Youth Leaders.
Staff members from the HSE Faculty of Social Sciences have made over 50 trips to international conferences in the past year. Alexander Kalgin, Lecturer at the School of Public Administration, shared his impressions about the International Symposium on Development and Governance in BRICS countries in Shanghai, and a visit to Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in Guangzhou to discuss a joint research project and to meet with representatives of the university administration responsible for international education cooperation.
BIGSSS–departs (doctoral education in partnerships) is a full-time international PhD program co-funded by the European Union. It provides close supervision of dissertation work in a demand-tailored education and research environment at the University of Bremen and Bremen’s Jacobs University.
On November 20th and 21st, 2015, an international conference ‘Convergence in a Complex World – Social, Political and Economic Perspectives’ took place in Germany. During talks that took place on July 23, HSE’s Isak Froumin and Alexander Sidorkin met with Shamsh Kassim-Lakha and Ariff Kachra of the University of Central Asia to discuss ways for the two universities to collaborate.
The European PhD in Socio Economic and Statistical Studies was initiated in 2001 by Sapienza Università di Roma. The programme is currently coordinated by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and brings together seven universities, including the University of Haifa, the University of Southampton and the University of Tampere.
HSE's publishing house has published the Russian version of the Oxford University Press textbook 'Democratization' edited by Christian Haerpfer, Patrick Bernhagen, Ronald Inglehart and Christian Welzel.
