The expert of the new issue of the "+/- 10 minutes" column is Anna Kartasheva, PhD in Philosophy, research fellow at the International Laboratory for Applied Network Research at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, and director of the publishing house "Business Book". In the lecture, we will look at how data becomes information, and information becomes knowledge. We will also discuss whether data can be a neutral and error-free record of facts, and how the specifics of knowledge formation affect modern information systems.

Xinyi Zhao, 23, is a second-year Master’s student in Comparative Social Research. Originally from Weihai, Shandong, China, she came to HSE University with a desire to turn theoretical knowledge into practical solutions. Xinyi spoke to the HSE News Service about the importance of utilising one’s learning, as well as why foreigners in Moscow shouldn’t be scared to ask for help.

Yuanqi Zhou, from China, is currently studying on the Master's in Comparative Social Research under Russian government scholarships and funding from the China Scholarship Council, while also working as a research assistant at Centre for Civil Society and Non-Profit Sector Studies. In this interview, Yanqi talks about scholarships, HSE University’s impressive academic resources, and the soothing qualities of a Moscow sky.

Fedor Shvets came to Russia from Kazakhstan, graduated from the Bachelor’s programme in Sociology and Social Informatics at HSE University in St Petersburg, and is currently studying for his Master’s degree in Population and Development at HSE University in Moscow. In an interview with the HSE News Service, he spoke about his choice of university and programme, and shared his impressions of living and studying in Moscow.

On April 12, 2023, within the framework of the XXIV Yasin (April) International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development, a session "Sociocultural Potential of Museums: Identity and Local Solidarity" was held (Moderator: N. Bolshakov (ILSIR, HSE University). 

At the recent seminar of the HSE International Laboratory for Social Integration Research, Isaac Olumayowa Oni, HSE doctoral student and lab research assistant, spoke about African migration to Russia. In an interview with HSE News Service, Isaac discussed his research and talked about what it’s like to study at HSE and live in Moscow.

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed every year on March 21 around the world. The sole aim of this day is to combat racial discrimination and promote unity.  On April 4, 2018, the Student Chamber in the Department of Public Policy held a symposium on promoting tolerance and respect for diversity in the spirit of ending racial discrimination and xenophobia. Attended by both students and lecturers, the symposium was conducted as an integral part of the course on 'Human Rights in Non-western Societies' that is taught in our Master’s programme on Political Analysis and Public Policy.

The Student Chamber of the Department of Public Policy at National Research University Higher School of Economics celebrated Human Rights Week – in honor of the adoption of Universal Declaration of Human Rights – by hosting a series of activities, a film screening, and write-for-rights by Amnesty International, a privilege walk and a play, performed by students from the department.

Like many international students who choose to study at the Higher School of Economics, Martin Inderhaug, a native of Bergen, Norway, boasts a rich background marked by a diverse set of interests. Although he has been at HSE for only six months since enrolling in the Master’s programme in Politics, Economics and Philosophy, his interest in Russia goes back to his days serving in Norway’s military in the country’s far north where he would gaze at the ‘unknown East’ across the border with Russia.

Currently Joe MacInnes is teaching Psychology courses on Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes offered by Faculty of Social Sciences. In February, together with HSE doctoral students Mikhail Pokhoday  and Ekaterina Gordienko, he conducted an intensive workshop on eye tracking for students of Master’s programme 'Cognitive Sciences and Technologies: From Neuron to Cognition' and everyone interested in the topic. The workshop covered basic principles of eye tracking, introduction to eye tracking hardware and practical sessions. 

Carol S. Leonard, Leading Research Fellow at the HSE Institute of Regional Studies and Urban Planning and Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, School of Public Administration, Department for Spatial Development and Regional Studies has been at the HSE since 2011. She talked to HSE News Service about the things she likes about her job, the cultured and energetic environment at HSE, and about the changes she sees across Russia since her undergraduate days when she first became interested in the country, its language and people.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Head of HSE School of Psychology Vasily Klucharev showed what occurs in the human brain when a person’s opinion conflicts with the majority’s opinion. What happens in the brains of nonconformists? What causes the «herd mentality»?
