The Faculty of Social Sciences is one of the most multidisciplinary faculties in the HSE. It is the product of uniting the faculties of sociology, applied political science, psychology and public administration, which are now schools, and a series of laboratories, research centers and institutes. This kind of synthesis of education and research in the sphere of social sciences is a standard part of global best practice for a modern research university.
We train researchers, analysts and practitioners of sociology, political science, psychology and management, and specialists in education, demographics, public policy and civil society. Our primary strategy in teaching bachelors, masters and doctorate courses is to prepare students to meet global demands and requirements as successful professionals.

The Faculty’s educational mission is to help a student become a researcher and a professional capable of rational critical thinking, reflection, and continuing independent creative, personal and professional growth.
The Faculty provides basic comprehensive knowledge and skills on the undergraduate level, advanced theoretical and practical professional knowledge on the master’s level, and academic specialization training at doctoral level. The Faculty is a leader among Russian universities in terms of the number of students enrolled in undergraduate and master’s programmes in social sciences.
We, like HSE in general, are actively internationalizing and both develop traditional academic mobility programmes, and attract highly qualified experts with degrees from leading international universities to teach our students.
During their study, the students acquire practical skills through internships in public institutions, private companies, and international organizations. The faculty and students comprise the core of several research laboratories, including international ones. The combination of academic and applied training provides for a wider choice in terms of careers.
Educational programmes at the HSE Faculty of Social Sciences are innovative in featuring a big share of project and practical courses, individual educational tracks for students, a wide range of extracurricular practices (summer and winter schools, research and study groups and laboratories etc.), close and intensive contacts with key employers through a system of joint departments and internships, to build academic tracks for students on all levels of education, from undergraduate to doctoral.
