CSRA in Nigeria: sharing experience and making friends
From 18-23 August 2024, we had a field trip to Nigeria under the project “The Socio-Political Development of Sub-Saharan Africa in the Context of Russian Foreign Policy Interests.” The purpose of this project was to investigate the complex features inherent in African societies and to facilitate the forecasting of socio-political dynamics, enabling the assessment of both stabilization and potential destabilization processes within the macro-region and its impact on other societies and the global system at large.
Our journey began in the bustling Metropolis of Lagos, a city pulsating with life and diversity. Our first stop was the University of Lagos, where we were welcomed by the University management and faculty members eager to discuss potential collaborations. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as we explored opportunities for staff and student exchange programs, joint research initiatives, and collaborative publications. The discussions were rich, focusing on how academic partnerships could foster deeper understanding and innovative solutions to pressing socio-political issues.
Next, we visited the Nigerian Institute for International Affairs (NIIA). Here, we engaged in a thought-provoking dialogue about the current state of ECOWAS and its role in regional stability. The experts shared insights on recent developments within Africa and speculated on the future of BRICS in the continent. This exchange was particularly enlightening, as it underscored the interconnectedness of regional organizations and their influence on global politics.
After our stimulating time in Lagos, we set off for Benin City, a place steeped in history and culture. Our visit to the Chief Palace of the Benin Kingdom was nothing short of mesmerizing. The palace stood as a testament to the rich heritage of the Benin Kingdom, showcasing intricate designs and artifacts that told stories of a glorious past. Following this cultural immersion, we made our way to the National Museum of Benin, where we marvelled at the renowned Benin Bronzes masterpieces that reflect the artistry and craftsmanship of the kingdom. The bronze market was our next stop, where local artisans showcased their skills, creating an atmosphere filled with creativity and tradition.
Our final destination was Abuja, Nigeria's capital, where we aimed to understand the nuances of governance and security in the country. We visited several key institutions, including the Nigerian Institute for Security Studies and the University of Abuja. Here, discussions centered on federalism in Nigeria, drawing parallels and contrasts with Russian federalism. It was fascinating to explore how different historical contexts shaped their political structures, governance models, and societal dynamics.
At the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, we engaged in dialogues about the evolution of democracy in Nigeria. These conversations illuminated the challenges and triumphs faced by Nigerian democracy, offering valuable lessons for other nations navigating similar paths. Our visit to the Huspa Innovation Centre at the African University for Science and Technology provided a glimpse into Nigeria's future, an emphasis on innovation and technology as drivers of development.
Throughout this enriching journey, we forged connections that extended beyond academic discourse. The warmth and hospitality of our Nigerian hosts left a lasting impression on us. By immersing ourselves in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape, we gained a deeper understanding of its complexities and potential.
As we concluded our trip, it became clear that our findings would not only contribute to our project but also foster ongoing collaborations that could lead to meaningful change. This expedition reaffirmed our commitment to understanding Sub-Saharan Africa's dynamics and highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing shared challenges.
