The Faculty of Social Sciences is one of the most multidisciplinary faculties in the HSE. It is the product of uniting the faculties of sociology, applied political science, psychology and public administration, which are now schools, and a series of laboratories, research centers and institutes. This kind of synthesis of education and research in the sphere of social sciences is a standard part of global best practice for a modern research university.
We train researchers, analysts and practitioners of sociology, political science, psychology and management, and specialists in education, demographics, public policy and civil society. Our primary strategy in teaching bachelors, masters and doctorate courses is to prepare students to meet global demands and requirements as successful professionals.

The Faculty of Social Sciences is the foremost educational and research organization of its kind in Russia. We offer cutting-edge instruction across the whole spectrum of social science disciplines for the researchers and professionals of today and tomorrow. In the key fields of sociology, political science, public administration, psychology and education, we offer a full range of degree programmes: right through from Bachelor’s degrees to an internationally recognized Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Our primary goal is to build students' knowledge and skills to meet international standards in the professional sphere.
We also provide an array of more focused Master’s programmes in education, demography, public policy and civil society, for those interested in preparing for doctoral research or advanced training in their chosen professions.
We are the first social science Faculty in Russia to offer Master’s degrees entirely in English, and at present we offer 8 such programmes. Highly qualified international faculty members make a significant contribution in teaching and research excellence of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Our students may also benefit from rich academic mobility opportunities within Russia and abroad.
The faculty’s educational programmes combine theory and practice. Our international partners include the University of Edinburgh (Scotland), Freie Universität Berlin and Universität Bayreuth (Germany), Charles University of Prague (Czech Republic), Sciences Po Toulouse and EHESS (France), KU Leuven and University of Antwerp (Belgium), University of Tilburg (the Netherlands), University of Bologna and University of Torino (Italy), University of Shanghai (China), George Mason University and University of Michigan (USA).
We encourage professional independence and develop both education and research. Synergy is one of our key objectives.
The faculty’s educational programmes combine depth of study with a focus on practical application. Our international partners include the Paris Institute of Political Studies, the Toulouse Institute of Political Studies and the Paris West University Nanterre de la Défense (France), the University of Jena and the University of Cologne (Germany), the University of Helsinki (Finland), the University of Bologna and the University of Padua (Italy), George Mason University and New York State University (USA) and Fudan University (China).
