Abstract:

The opening of the first metropolitan underground railroads around 1900 marks the rise of a central subject type of modernity: the urban passenger. Focusing on the New York Subway, the largest urban transit system of the 20th century, Stefan Höhne analyzes the historical dynamics of the sociabilities, control techniques and subjectivities of their passengers. In these interactions between man and machine, central cultural techniques of modernity are developed, which react both to the hardships of industrial mass culture as well as allowing for new experiences, encounters and liberties.
