Research at the School of Sociology

The School of Sociology employs Russia’s leading experts in academic fields such as history and theory of sociology, methods of sociological research, economic sociology, sociology of education, sociology of labour and employment, sociology of culture, gender sociology, and sociology of the internet. The School’s staff members work with the Higher Attestation Commission and serve as editors at academic journals (Journal of Social Policy Studies, Universe of Russia, Sociology 4M, Journal of Economic Sociology); they also participate as members on elected bodies of Russian and international research organizations in this field (e.g., Russian Society of Sociologists and the Association of Professional Sociologists (APS)).

The School’s staff form the core in research departments such as the Laboratory for Studies in Economic sociology, the Laboratory of Entrepreneurship Research, and the ‘Mixed methods research: needs, design and procedure implementation’ group. Some of the School’s scholars are actively involved in research at the Laboratory of Comparative Social Research headed by Anna Almakaeva, the International laboratory for Applied Network Research headed by Daria Maltseva, the Institute of Education, and other large research departments at HSE.

Over the last five years, researchers from the School have published dozens of scholarly papers in authoritative Russian and international sociological journals, including American Journal of Sociology, Research in Social Stratification and Mobility, Cultural Studies, Journal of Family Issues, European Sociological Review, and Journal of European Social Policy. Staff from the School participate and speak at all leading Russian and international research conferences and congresses in sociology.

The School of Sociology regularly hosts the Levada National Research Conference on Contemporary Russian Society and Sociology, the Kryshtanovsky Research Conference and the APS annual conference. In 2012, the Laboratory for Studies in Economic sociology held a major international conference entitled Embeddedness and Beyond: Do Sociological Theories Meet Economic Realities?
