On March 14th students, teachers and staff of the HSE met the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Uri Rosenthal. The lecture was addressed primarily to the students and was broadcast to all HSE regional branches. Thanks to video conference facilities, HSE students from Saint Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod and Perm had the opportunity not only to watch and listen to the speech, but also to ask questions to the minister after the lecture.
Mark Urnov, Academic Supervisor of the HSE Faculty of Politics, talked to us about his view of the middle class and about the research he’s been carrying out with Irina Soboleva and Anton Sobolev in four Russian regions, as well discussing the reasons for the popularity of this work among international researchers.
In October, Professor Abel Polese from the University of Edinburgh Institute of Geography gave a series of lectures at the Higher School of Economics for students of the Faculty of Politics, as part of the IMESS Visiting Scholars programme. Boris Zhelezov, Deputy Vice Rector and Head of the Office of International Academic Mobility of the HSE, and Abel Polese himself told us about the lectures and the IMESS programme.
Recently at the decision of the HSE Academic
Council Andrey Melville was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Applied Political
Sciences, and Professor Mark Urnov became Academic Supervisor of the Faculty.
The new dean Andrey Melville told us about the prospects for the Faculty's
development, about research activities and undergraduate and postgraduate
programmes .
Academic Papers of the 9th International Session of the HSE Russian–European Center for Multidisciplinary Research were published by Vytautas Magnus University Press, Kaunas, Lithuania.

Huntington Memorial Symposium on Culture, Cultural Change and
Economic Development took place at the HSE. It was organized by the
Cultural
Change Institute (the Fletcher School, Tufts University, USA) and the
Higher
School of Economics. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met with the
Symposium participants.

From August 8th
– 20th the Fourth International Summer School will take place in
Lapland. The organizer of the School, Sergey Medvedev, Deputy Dean of
the HSE
Faculty of Applied Political Science, told us about the programme and
aims of
the School this year.

On March 23 - April 3 the Higher
School of Economics hosted a joint Spring School Public Policy and
Transformation. Roman Kotov, Head of the HSE Center
for International Education speaks about the project.
