The Faculty of Social Sciences is one of the most multidisciplinary faculties in the HSE. It is the product of uniting the faculties of sociology, applied political science, psychology and public administration, which are now schools, and a series of laboratories, research centers and institutes. This kind of synthesis of education and research in the sphere of social sciences is a standard part of global best practice for a modern research university.
We train researchers, analysts and practitioners of sociology, political science, psychology and management, and specialists in education, demographics, public policy and civil society. Our primary strategy in teaching bachelors, masters and doctorate courses is to prepare students to meet global demands and requirements as successful professionals.

HSE has improved its position in two Times Higher Education (THE) rankings compared to last year. The university demonstrated the greatest growth in the Social Sciences category, rising from the 175-200 group to 126-150. Additionally, HSE improved within the 101-125 group of the Business and Economics ranking.
HSE ranked first among Russian universities in the Social Sciences category, surpassing last year’s leader, Moscow State University. A total of six Russian universities are part of this subject ranking, including Moscow State University (301-400) and St. Petersburg State University (401-500), as well as four Project 5–100 participants – HSE (126-150), Kazan Federal University (301-400), Tomsk State University (401-500), and Ural Federal University (600+). For the third year in a row, HSE ranked first among Russian universities in Business and Economics. There are four Russian universities in this category: Moscow State University (101-125), St. Petersburg State University (251-300), HSE (101-125), and Kazan Federal University (301-400).
HSE was able to improve and strengthen its positions on the THE subject rankings thanks to its improved teaching and research reputation within the international community. The release of the THE ranking concludes the publication of subject rankings in the socioeconomic sphere for this year. It is important to note that as of today, HSE is Russia’s number one university in both sociology and economics based on the three main international rankings – ARWU, THE, and QS.
This year, the number of universities in the rankings grew from 400 to 601+ for the Social Sciences category and from 200 to 501+ for Business and Economics.
The methodology of Times Higher Education rankings by subject relies on the same 13 indicators in five categories as the institutional ranking, but the value of indicators varies depending on the subject.
