Book Presentation: 'Leading from the Periphery and Network Collective Action' (Cambridge University Press, 2017)

Event ended

5 April at 4:00 PM will be the presentation of the book of Navid Hassanpour 'Leading from the Periphery and Network Collective Action' (Cambridge University Press, 2017).

Short description: 'Political and social mobilization, influence maximization in marketing innovation and Get Out The Vote campaigns are all characterized with their obsession with central vanguards and highly visible early adopters. In contrast, I introduce instigation from the margins of social network as a distinct mobilization tactic. In this talk, I argue that the dynamics of 'Leading from the Periphery' are different from centralized organization: its diffusion benefits from lack of information, it sustains itself in marginal clusters of risk taking in otherwise globally sparse networks, and in behavioural network experiments we have conducted, it spreads faster than centrally lead cascades, when it takes hold. I trace such dynamics in two recent Middle Eastern urban conflicts, as well as a series of networked experiments pertaining to collective risk taking'.

Address: 3 Krivokolenny Pereulok, room 3-209.
