Open lecture: “What neural connections can tell us about brain development?"

HSE Open Lectures holds public talks with young scientists. The September lectures are dedicated to cognitive neurosciences. Our colleague, Andrei Faber, will talk about formation of  neural connections and their role in the development of intellectual abilities. The lecture will be held on September 28, 19:30 as a part of the HSE project "University Open to the City".

Throughout our lives we learn new things, and this happens especially intensively at school age. Our brain grows with our body during childhood and adolescence in parallel with our intelligence. How are these processes related, and what do we know about the link between intellectual exercising and brain development?

Nowadays, thanks to modern technology, scientists can study changes in the brain at the neuronal level. Obtaining new knowledge and skills is impossible without consolidating the passed material. Neuroscientists found that by repetitive activation of the same group of  neurons, connections between them become stronger. Does it make us smarter? At the lecture, we will talk about neural connections and their role in the development of intellectual abilities. We will find out how the number of neurons changes throughout life. Finally, we will discuss what can help us to make our brain better.
