In the context of smart specialization, how can we produce spaces and urban interventions which people want to use? Dr. Bleil de Souza will discuss three different approaches about how community participation can be used to inform decision making.

Using a first hand, or practice oriented, approach she will present cases from community participation in a micro-urban intervention, community participation in a heritage management plan and community participation in disaster recovery. Each case study is in a different continent and illustrates in which stage of the decision making process community input happens as well as in what shape it is provided. A discussion on the advantages and criticism in terms of achieving desirable outcomes is proposed, followed by specific questions to be debated outlining the necessary mechanisms to be put in place to ensure the effective use of data coming from participatory initiatives.
