"Club by the Students for the Students": First Russian-Speaking Club Meeting Held at HSE

The Faculty of Social Sciences has launched the Club of International Students (CIS) this academic year. Its goal is to facilitate the integration of international students into the life of the Faculty by organizing joint events. On September 25, the first meeting of the Russian‑speaking group for international students was held as part of the CIS. The meeting, which focused on Russian culture, was conducted by Sofya Cherepnina, a third‑year student at HSE. The participants were international students with varying levels of Russian-language proficiency – from beginners to those who speak the language confidently. The first meeting brought together several dozen students.

The atmosphere from the very beginning was warm and informal: students got acquainted, chatted, did interactive tasks, learned new words, and even practiced the Russian alphabet together. Tea, coffee, and sweets helped everyone relax and not be afraid to speak. As the organizers – Ayoub, Bilal, and Isaac – note, the first meeting made it clear that this format of meetings is in demand. It’s important for the participants not just to learn the rules, but to practice pronunciation in a live social environment.

The plans of the Russian‑speaking group do not end here. In addition to regular meetings, games, role‑playing tasks, and conversations in small groups, if necessary, participants will be divided by level: beginners will be able to focus on the basic rules, while more confident ones will be able to practice them. The main thing is to maintain an informal and friendly atmosphere, where the Russian language is taught through culture, and culture is taught through the Russian language. There will be more meetings: the organizers plan to add new sessions every few months.

The Club’s doors are open to everyone: join in!

The Club of International Students is a community for foreign students at the Faculty of Social Sciences, where you can make friends, practice Russian, and participate in a wide variety of events – from academic seminars to museum visits and meetings with outstanding alumni.
