Eye tracking

What is it?

Eye-tracking, or oculography, — is a technology that allows to capture the eye movements of a person.

How does it work?

Testing with modern eye-trackers goes unnoticed by people;   without causing any inconvenience or distracting from the task being carried out. The direction of the gaze is determined without contact, based on the vector between the center of the pupil and the reflection of built-in infrared light off the cornea. This vector changes when the direction of the gaze changes, but remains the same when the head is moving.

How does the assessment run?

The person sits on a chair, in which the eye tracker is set. A simple calibration is carried out to configure the device for the individual's characteristics. The subject is asked to look at different points one by one, which allow the eye-tracker to correlate the direction of the gaze with a specific point on the research object. After this, it is possible to carry out the task normally, without paying attention to the device.

Why is it needed?

In cognitive reseach, eye-tracking has become an indispensable instrument. For example, when analyzing visual seach strategies and problem solving: how do people look for what they need in a picture, how do they move their gaze from one object to another? Eye-trackers are often used in psycholinguistics tasks and in research on reading processes. The data data from the device can help determine a person's mental state, attention, and motivation level.

Is it safe?

This method is completely safe for both children and adults, since there is no effect on the subject. Essentially, an eye-tracker is just a special video camera that contonuously records the direction of the gaze.
