Course Overview

This course is designed to provide standard operating procedures for students who are interested in contacting studies that use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).  MRI is a non-invasive technique for imaging internal body parts, and it is very safe if proper safety procedures are used.
Strong magnetic fields present unique hazards to research participants and MRI personnel. For this reason it is important for everyone using an MRI Facility to be aware of MRI safety procedures. This course will include an overview of MRI principles, MR system components, general safety procedures, and MR screening.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Make her- or himself safe to enter an MR environment;
2. Demonstrate the understanding of basic principles of MRI;
3. Explain the dangers of static magnetic fields;
4. Apply knowledge from Standard Operating Procedures;
5. Administer MR safety screening form;
6. Demonstrate the understanding of procedures for incidental findings.

Topics:

— MRI principles and components
— Standard operating procedures
— MR screening and Testing participants

Certificate: A certificate for successful course completion will be provided. You should score greater than 70% on the exam to meet the criteria for the successful course completion.

Schedule: Registration for the 2022 "MRI Safety" course will be opened in October 2022.
