Value orientations and models of behavior of women in building a career in public authorities
The first seminar dedicated to women in the civil service was held in the new academic year.
At the seminar, the participants of the expedition to Vladivostok told about the preliminary results of the study of value orientations and behaviors of women civil servants of Primorsky Krai. 25 semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with civil servants of Primorsky Krai aged 25 to 35 years, of which 19 informants were women and 6 were men.
It was revealed that women in Primorye as a rule come to the civil service "on acquaintance", although the formal procedure of competitive selection for applying for a position remains. For the employees the most significant benefit at civil service is stability, which is related to fixed wages, the availability of social guarantees and other benefits, in particular, the conditions of maternity leave. Public servants do not attac special importance to their status of civil servants, considering civil service as a usual job. Female employees of public bodies are mainly represented in the junior and middle categories of positions, although generally women are more keen on the idea of increasing the number of women at the decision-making level. One of the most interesting facts found is that women in Primorsky Krai are inherent to discriminate themselves, voluntarily creating a glass ceiling for themselves. Most respondents knew what position they were not ready to rise above. The main deterrent to career growth was the fear of increased responsibility, disruption of the work-life balance, which is already severely influenced by unpaid overtime.
At the end of the seminar, the participants asked questions and learn more about the trip to Vladivostok, which was organized as part of the project "Rediscovering Russia".
