of Three English-taught Master's Programmes

Programme goal
The aim of our programme is to provide the theoretical and methodological tools required to shed light on differences between nations, cultures and other social groups. During seminars and lectures, our students investigate social problems and issues in today's world from a perspective of interconnectedness between the social action of individuals at different levels of collectivity, for example, at the level of society or culture.

Our programme provides in-depth insights into how individuals approach social reality, using either quantitative methodology for investigating norms and values or qualitative methodology for assessing individuals’ interpretations of their world.

Advantages of the programme

The Master’s programme in Comparative Social Research features a number of advantages, including a wide network of partner institutions where students find thesis supervisors and internship opportunities. Additionally, the programme features two double degree tracks, both of which will be of interest to students considering a Master’s degree in social science:

• School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences – Paris, France
• Freie Universität – Berlin, Germany

Career opportunities
As holders of an MA in social science, graduates of the programme are well-equipped for international careers as social researchers. Many of our students go on to doctoral programmes at our partner universities (or at HSE). Others begin their careers as research associates at international organizations such as the World Bank, the International Labour Organization, OECD, UNESCO, and UNICEF.

Programme goal
The programme aims to develop students’ skills in applying multi-disciplinary analytic approaches to different development and resource allocation issues, as well as deep population and demographic structure analysis. These skills are essential for public administration in numerous sectors where practical development problems arise.

• The educational programme has been updated in the framework of a grant funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation (grant ID: 075-15-2020-928). 
•  Given HSE’s location in the centre of Moscow, one of the world’s largest cities with a variety of rich social, cultural, academic and professional opportunities, the programme offers a number of advantages, including scholars and teachers with diverse professional experience representing renowned Russian and foreign universities, a multi-disciplinary approach to education, an opportunity to collaborate with different NGOs, think tanks and UN organizations through internships and part-time employment, academic mobility programmes with partner universities and research labs.

Career opportunities
Graduates of the programme will have skills and knowledge in the principals of population change and social and economic development. Additionally, they will have a strong command of modern methods of data analysis. Our programme’s graduates have pursued careers in a variety of sectors, including:

• Private business (e.g., consulting, recruiting, marketing, insurance, pharmaceutical, and healthcare companies)
• Public administration (e.g., government agencies)
• International funds and non-governmental organizations (e.g., UN, WHO, and the World Bank)
• Research centres and universities

Programme goal
The programme aims to develop a number of competencies, including conflict analysis and resolution, public policymaking, stakeholder analysis, social research, as well as data collection and analysis of public policy issues. With instruction in English by leading global experts, students are given a strong multi-disciplinary foundation of skills and knowledge required to articulate issues of public concern, analyse alternative policies, facilitate the adoption and implementation of specific choices, and evaluate their effects.
